Our History

The Haven Network incorporated February, 2004 in Rockford, Illinois under the leadership of Dr. Byron Calhoun, a pioneer in the perinatal hospice movement. Family Services, the out-reach program that provides family support on an individualized basis, was established October 1, 2004.

An Overview of The Haven Network

The emotional upheaval a family endures when told their baby is dying is difficult to comprehend by those who have not had the same experience. This turmoil affects every member of the family, including grandparents, regardless of economic status, religion or race.

In years past, such families were ignored and often treated as if there never was a baby.

These families, particularly mothers, experience such symptoms as “aching arms” pain, extreme loneliness and depression.

The Haven Network strives to meet the needs of these grieving families and if possible, become involved in their journey at the time they receive the diagnosis of their pre-born baby’s terminal condition. We are an independent community organization that collaborates with physicians and clergy to bring a caring and sensitive response to broken-hearted families.

Our Family Services Program provides emotional, spiritual and practical support, including meal delivery, layettes and burial gowns, and memory boxes through trained volunteers. Our Family Partner volunteers receive specialized education that assists them to journey with their assigned family for one year and will extend that support through subsequent pregnancies if desired.

The Haven does not charge for its services but relies on charitable donations and grants.

Affirmation of Mission

At The Haven:

  • We believe each baby is handcrafted by the Triune God and is a valued member of the human family.
  • We believe each baby, pre-born or newly born, is worthy of tender, palliative care until natural death.
  • We believe every family member, regardless of race or creed, deserves to be treated with honor and dignity.
  • We recognize that parents have the primary role in caring for their baby and deserve support and encouragement, enabling them to be the best parents possible in their time of grief.
  • We are honored, as staff and volunteers, to be the servants of Christ and will strive to model His example of compassionate care.
